Remember the vest from <a href="http://craftophilia.blogspot.com/2015/03/progress-report-29.html">Progress Report 29</a>? Sewing in the ends at last. It has been a year of flux and change and finally after landing in the Pacific Northwest and figuring out our daily routines and day to day stuff I feel like I can dive back in and really get work done. The first half of 2016 is about applying KonMari (SPARK JOY!) to my creative life, either finishing things, following ideas or just axing them and moving one. Two socks frogged, a couple pattern drafts trashed and now finishing details on a couple knitting projects including this vest. I started it at I think a 3 year old size and yeah, that is a couple years too small for my kid now. Thankfully knit stretches and I can add whatever length to this to make it a dress so it will be worn this weekend! Clearing the decks to make room for designing and playing with natural dyeing and patternmaking and weaving and sashiko and getting back to working on a mix of it all. Happy new year!</div>

Weaving and surface-y stuff. I've been working with these small wooden shapes to use as frames and bases. They are all in the 4" x 6" range and I drilled in holes to use to warp into. The holes are off and the warp is off, but I like it. I'm thinking of playing with skewing it even more. The structure doesn't matter as much because it's supported by the frame and, also, because they are small. I love wonky and awkward things and I'm feeling more attached to these then I have with anything in a while. Which is great! I have more to do!</div>

I have been thinking about <a href="http://www.livingcrafts.com/blog/weaving/an-earth-loom-in-the-garden">Earth Looms</a> a lot lately and how much I would like to build one somewhere in my community. As luck/fate would have it, I was approached by a wonderful organization here called <a href="http://www.enablinggarden.org/">The Guelph Enabling Garden</a> - a community garden that is accessible to all. I recruited my brother to build the loom and the following week, I had a group of people come warp it and weave on it. Participants walked around the garden and were able to pick things that they wanted to weave into the loom. I'm excited because there are several group weavings planned for the future! I'm looking forward to the winter one where we will use evergreen and weave in strands of popcorn for the birds. </div>

Beautiful Gotland Shetland cross fleece that I found at <a href="http://www.fiberfusion.net/">Fiber Fusion</a>, a local fiber festival. My daughter insisted on getting this one, and Im glad I listened to her reasoning, this sheep lived in Coupeville where we had just visited for a weekend and "probably ate lots of mussels" (probably not!) because that just what we did. </div>

I really love combining techniques in creating my puppets and dolls. I am currently working on a budgie doll and decided I wanted to weave the wings. Heading into Autumn, feeling the need to make some warm woolies for everyone. Wool socks are a necessity and not cheap, but somehow over the years I have amassed a stash of quite a lot of sock yarn and it makes more sense to just make them this year. Its the first time I have made socks completely from math and measurements and though they look pointy they fit my kid better than any other socks I have made for myself from a pattern. I love this time of year, the slowing down and working on home projects and turning a bit inwards, it suits my hermit-y craft pursuits. </div>

I've been working on this great shawl called <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sea-glass-7">Sea glass</a>. It's been a great carry around project of join-as-you-go crochet motifs. The best is that Kelbourne Woolens declared this summer <a href="http://kelbournewoolens.com/blog/2015/7/crochetsummer2015-instagram-highlights-so-far">Crochet Summer 2015</a> and there have been some amazing projects tagged. I used a very fun multi-coloured yarn and, as I usually do, ran out of yarn just in time for the border. This happens to me a lot and I really like that it does. It gives me a chance to get creative and add a fun new colour or texture element. This time, I'm using some fun hand-dyed yellow yarn that I had in my stash to finish it off! It's the perfect fall colours and I can't wait to give it a bath and wear it!</div>

Merino, spun woolen, feels like spiderwoman spinning chewing gum so fine. Its really my favorite way to spin wool, the ease of pulling the wool into place, letting it fill the twist as it will. 4 bobbins full to ply and then dye in a rudbeckia bath, then to overdye some of it in indigo as a test. </div>

Aaannnd we are back! It has been a record hot summer in the Pacific Northwest and we moved back here right in the middle of it - it has been great for starting some dyeplants in the garden to quickly harvest and dry to work with when the rain comes (and rumor has it thats tomorrow.) I took a natural dyeing class from farm to field with <a href="https://localcolorfiberstudio.squarespace.com/">Local Color Fiber Studio</a> on Bainbridge Island a couple weeks ago in which we harvested from the dye fields in the morning and dyed in the studio in the afternoon. I never really had the space to really get into dyeing anything until now in our new house, and this class renewed my intense love of playing with color and learning about what can be grown here in this usually short growing season. Already planning next years dye garden in a borrowed plot, indigo and other things but for right now just cutting and keeping dahlias, marigolds and rudbeckia for days. Heading out on a hike to look for hawthorne berries and oregon grape tomorrow, hoping to forage some to try too. </div>

I'm enjoying making theses dolls! I've pretty much finished the Cat. I was concerned that there was too much going on with all the different colours and textures and was assured by my friend and studio mate <a href="http://franceshahn.fluidgalleries.co/">Frances</a> that in fact the Cat needed perhaps a Peter Pan Collar or an Elizabethan Ruff - thank you Frances and you're right. I'll be working on finishing that soon! Now I'm working on the Rabbit. I'm thinking about ways to make stands for them as well. I would like them to be scrappy looking too and may use some wood scraps and dowel. I'm going to consult with my <a href="http://www.cvwood.com/">brother</a> who is a talented cabinet maker to see what ideas he has. For now I'm having lots of fun!</div>

A reknitted/revision. I had this little vest along with me while traveling all of last month and realized my daughter is just growing too fast for my knitting, that I need to add another 3 inches at least to make it a "dressvest" as requested. But it "has to end with the pink and then the blue" so I found another ball of Noro Kureyon and unknit it and am now adding length with the green yarn. Its nice to have a constant companion of a project like this one while contemplating the new possibilities of moving north - new energy, new directions. How to incorporate the forest into craft? How to marry the same divine presence felt in a redwood circle to the effortless energy of weaving weft into warp? How to keep learning, keeping your mind and your hands happy. Planning, reknitting, revisioning. </div>

I have been working on homework for my spinning class a lot lately - it's just that time of year. Anyway, it's not very exciting to photograph or talk about. It's very methodical and specific… I'm taking a little break with some more freeform stuff. Finishing making some dolls that I've had kicking around for awhile. I'm very excited about the combination of techniques and materials I'm able to use - paper, weaving, crochet and, likely, some fabric too. Here's a little peek of a siamese cat I'm making.</div>

I have three puppet heads and three puppet bodies. I have zero time to work on them now because of a large amount of spinning homework I have to do by the end of the month. Right now, I would rather be working on my puppets, but I must push on with homework. My one indulgence during homework time is that I still go to the weaving studio. These little guys will have to keep smiling at me from my desk as I spin… I'll reunite with them first thing in February! </div>

My worktable today. Felt, Felt, more felt, designing, stitching, planning. Little dolls, Chinese New Year decorations, lots of little things for celebrations this year. The word for this year is INTENTIONAL and in the realm of my craft its focusing on what is relevant to our lives and what makes my heart sing. Looking forward to the first warp of the year on the loom this weekend, making lots of real food, and making by hand the little things. Happy new year!</div>

This is a progress picture of a tapestry weaving I'm working on. I'm very happy with all the techniques I'm using to create it. There's coiling, knotting and colour blending. It's about three feet wide and 4 feet tall. The progress pictures I'm taking are not the best as the studio has fluorescent lights. I will document the whole piece nicely when I'm done, but now I like to take a picture at the beginning and end of each session so I can note my progress. I'm enjoying the process so much and love learning from <a href="http://ixchelsuarez.com/home.html">Ixchel</a> who is a wonderful teacher!</div>

I did not mean for this weaving to take so long, but considering half of it was woven with a severely bruised wrist and hand I am so happy to have finished it at all! I love the interplay of warp and weft - a subtle stripe and also variations in texture. Also I have to figure out how to get a floor loom, Saori or otherwise. Weaving on the rigid heddle loom works well but I really just want to fly right now. I can get into a good rhythm but its a bit slower than my hands and heart want to work at.</div>

I finally finished and blocked my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/camino-de-santiago-2">Camino de Santiago</a> cowl by Danielle Kassner. I started it last year when I was visiting Cal at <a href="http://hodgepodgefarm.net/">Hodge Podge Farm</a>. It's made out of a variety of yarns from my stash and is super warm and cushy and perfect for the impending winter. It's done in tapestry crochet and I have to say that this is one of my favourite techniques. I cannot wait to use it more and make up my own patterns. The only thing about it was that it was a difficult project to carry around because there was a chart and several balls of yarn on the go at once. I'm thinking of digging out my fingerless mitts to finish - a pattern by the same designer. </div>

Last week I almost totally destroyed my left hand in a fall at my daughter's school. Thankfully, after xrays nothing was deemed broken, just a lot of pain, bruising, and a sprain. My doctor's prescription was normal daily activity in moderation, and when I explained that that for me was alot of handwork she said yes. My hands were used to the work and it was important to keep the muscles moving in the ways they are used to. Alisa sent me a message that Laboradite would be a good stone to hold in my hand to help heal, so I spent the last week weaving and knitting on this vest, alternating with rest holding my favorite blue flashy stone in hand. And today my hand is so purple, turning yellow, in the clearing up stages of bruising and looks terrible but feels totally normal. Thank you craft. Thank you hands.</div>

Yesterday I went on a little outing with my little knitting/crochet group. We went to this very nice store called <a href="http://www.camillavalleyfarm.com/">Camilla Valley Farms</a>. It's an amazing little store in an outbuilding on a farm about 45 minutes away from where I live. The two best things about it are that they carry every colour of Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift - looking at that wall inspired me to pick up some yarn for a cardigan that I fell in love with. The pattern is beautiful and kind of different that what I usually make. I don't want to post a picture yet… I'll post my progress. The second amazing thing is that they are a weaving supply place and, holy moly, I'll be returning soon! I wish I could teleport Jenne here to visit the shop with me!</div>

Sometimes it is like a domino run, one craft bumps into another craft, start working on a project and hey, I want to do this to use it in that. After the halloween costume making hurricane that consumed my studio last week, I did a big clean up and picked up one of my spindles and felt like spinning again. I found this electric pink roving that I had put in the sell/trade bin now it makes all the sense with the technicolor palette I am weaving now and started to spin it up. I am rusty. I dropped my spindle a lot. But I spun enough to realize that its going to be my morning ritual - waking up early making tea and spinning for a half an hour before everyone is up. Making the yarn I want. Maybe to get to a goal of 100% handspun for weaving. Slowly, with little steps.</div>

Halloween said hello and consumed my studio time this last week and as much as I felt like I was cruising along with the weaving I had to take a break to make this come to life. Cotton Flannel, Silver Lame, Sparkely Yarn, this was 100% my daughters input at the fabric store and I either was not paying attention or was super tired and came home with these materials. Next day reviewing the project and, whoa. Yet somehow, flannel is a perfect backing and support to silver lame. Not hard to sew at all. Wings, a hat with a mane and a braided tail, no jumpsuit as in the pattern but please a pink dress and tail the same as my favorite denim dress. Yes, of course, Happy Halloween my little pink pegasus. </div>

I have been studying tapestry weaving with<a href="http://ixchelsuarez.com/home.html"> Ixchel Suarez</a> for about four months. In mid-September I started a larger piece, moving on from my samplers. It's been wonderful because I'm able to incorporate all the textural techniques into it that I love! This picture is to show one of the techniques that I love the most - knotting! It's great because you can go back to the area and cut/trim it to suit the piece. This part is much longer than it will be in the finished piece. I'm done this area and moving back to a flat weave to fill in around it. It's labour intensive as an art form and I'm enjoying taking pictures of the piece at the beginning and ending of each session. I would say it's about 2.5' x 4.5' ish, so it's quite large. I'm missing working on it this week, but I'm teaching a doll making class which is also very fun…. one can't do it all!</div>

Playing with color - its way too fun. Whats not so fun is warp threads snapping which is what you see there on the left. I cut this piece off the loom and am going to explore sewing with it. Felt it slightly to lock in that warp snag and tranformation into... pillows, hood to a jacket? Yokes of dresses, pockets? And then back to the loom, to weave more yardage.</div>

Cal is, among other things, a crochet goddess and this is her pattern. I had this beautiful yarn laying around that my mom gave to me and I needed a "mindless" project to work on while I concentrate on bigger things (like a large tapestry weaving I'm doing that is really hard to photograph at this stage). I have to say that the yarn and pattern work really well together and I know I'm going to love this shawl! It's also one of those situations where you want to keep going to see what the next colour looks like - total motivation to get it done!</div>

I love weaving. The rhythm and the wordless consideration of what color change to do or how far to pull the clasped weft is meditation for me. I love weaving at night it is the perfect way to end the day and I love waking up in the morning and peeking in my studio to see the colors in the sunlight. The warp is still crazy, and last night two warp threads broke so I was up super late getting through the rough parts. No big deal, tie on a connector through the heddle and move on. In my mind I was hoping to get to this technicolor place, the warp creating a background of light and dark (there is some brown in the honeycomb color yarn) and this is exactly it. </div>

I finally finished my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pop-spots">Pop Spots</a> Siamese Cat shawl and I love it! I decided to put a crocheted edging on it instead of the knitted one called for in the pattern, mostly because I love crochet and love adding it to knitting. I was chose a clover pattern which goes with the personal theme of this scarf (I even added a four leaf clover as a surprise). I was getting a little worried towards the end that it wasn't going to be very big as the pattern structure is quite collapsable, but it blocked out quite a lot. I just love how big and cozy this shawl is and how my <a href="http://craftophilia.blogspot.ca/2014/03/progress-report-2.html">nearest and dearest</a> had a huge hand in the making of it. I have completed two circular weavings during our experiments. It's not nearly as many as I would have liked to. The good thing is that I have come up with a good routine to fit this exercise into my daily studio time. So, maybe this exercise ended up not being about weaving within a circle, but establishing dedicated time for a desired project. We're going to be moving on to new project experimentations soon, but I'm going to keep up with my "small weaving" routine. I really like how I finished the larger piece. I used yarns to wrap around the interior wood of the circle to create a nice frame and hide some warping threads that were bugging me. It was fun adding warp as I went to create shapes and weaving within weaving. Branching off into other segments. I also used all hand-spun. </div>

I put a particularly gnarly pair of yarns on my loom as warp this week. Knowing that one yarn was way springier than the other (3ply wool vs 2ply mohair and silk) but color wise and just need to go together wise are PERFECT for one another so I went for it. What is not pictured is the crazy differential tension set up I made by putting a long shed stick from my bigger loom across the backbeam and under the springier yarn to take up some of that sproing so that it can become more reasonably even to weave. It works, its not totally convenient and I continue to work in my jerry rigged, make it work sort of way. Its challenging but if it all works out like I have it in my head, its going to be crazy great.</div>

I often get bogged down by what I "should" be doing during my studio time. This is very anti-Craftophilia and I'm glad when I can be reminded of the mandate that rules my creative life - Commit to Process. Sometimes, it does take a little push though. This one came from the necessity to create some "samples" for a class I'm going to be teaching in October on doll making. I'm no stranger to doll making as an art form - in fact it's something that I have thoroughly enjoyed in the past. I was a bit scared to do these samples because my doll making skills are rusty and I felt I no longer possessed the ability to get lost in the process. I over thought it. Then, I did it. I sat down and got lost in the process and it was great! And, I produced something that I love. So, please meet the Birds that Hang Around my Feeder - The Grackle, M. Today is the Fall Equinox and I feel an itch to get back to working with wool, back to spinning, weaving and knitting and working with felt. There seems to be a seasonality to what materials I tend to want to work with - this summer I have been on a major sewing and sashiko stitching jam (with some weaving and knitting) but now on this very overcast first day of Autumn I just want to cuddle up with some sheepy yarn. In the "inspiration comes from pretty much anywhere" department, I was stuck on what to do for my next weaving. At first I wanted to try something monochromatic but as I was winding that warp I was not feeling it. Then I thought maybe I will try to play with color in the weft but use a black and/or white warp. Also did not feel it. Not enough COLORS. My jam is a kaleidoscope of colors. Mixing it up, matching, contrasting, making crazy rainbows. In the "this is not a tangent" department, my jam for the month of September is the song "September" by Earth Wind and Fire. Some people get into their pumpkin spice lattes or candles or whatever (sorry, not me) this time of year I have "September" on REPEAT at FULL VOLUME starting September 1st. The video for "September" was posted to <a href="http://www.sarahutter.com/hello/SARAH_UTTER_-_WELCOME%21.html">Sarah's</a> Facebook wall this weekend which I was stoked to watch, singing along, digging in yarn bins in my studio and yes. Inspiration can be totally like this. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gs069dndIYk">Go watch it.</a> I am totally using gold metallic thread and this assortment of yarn and am so PSYCHED to make this weaving now. </div>

"When craft is in dialogue with its audience, it does not and cannot stagnate. The fresh flowing water of our field turns fetid when we as makers and audience assume, shut down, impose strict limitations, or end every thought or art work with a period rather than a question mark. The common denominator among experts, innovators and outliers is curiosity. Experts with years of embodied knowledge intertwine curiosity with persistence. Sometimes, there are small shifts in the studio; other times, seismic shifts. A level for inquiry is a constant force. Innovators dissect a precept and build from their discoveries, while outliers use curiosity to build bridges between their primary interests and others. The majority of artists I know combine aspects of these qualities."</i></span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Craftophilia is a dialogue about process. The projects Alisa and I are compelled to do, t</span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: -webkit-auto;">rying to see how the way we each work is motivated or inhibited by the weekly demand of having something "made" (or in the process of being made.) By posting (almost!) every week what we have been able to make with our hands we are learning about exactly why and how we do and make things. </span></div>

<div style="orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: -webkit-auto;">Craftophilia is totally transparent, laying bare the processes we go through, open with our personal experiences of making. What works, what happens when you have no time at all to make anything, when it totally fails, at the pace of how it actually happens in our daily lives. It is our biggest hope that it inspires you to pick up the material that sings to you and make, without fear of any of these outcomes or circumstances that may stand in your way of making something as there is no fail there is just DO.</span></div>
<div style="orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">PROCESS NOTES is an open ended list of ideas, questions and further explorations from what we found useful while making a circular weaving: from wrapping the first warp around the hoop to almost (finally) finishing one hoop. Hoping that this inspires you to take material that is vernacular to your life (yarn leftovers, pine needles from the yard, darning needles, kitchen twine etc.) and experiment with it to make something new.</span></div>

Experimenting is extremely important. Sitting down with your hoop and warp thread and playing with the warp is almost better than following directions. Creating a visual, tactile memory and a rhythm. Does warping in a figure-eight work better for a "diameter warp" than over one side of your hoop and under coming back? How about tying each thread individually to create an off centre "spoke warp"? Remember, using an embroidery hoop is beneficial as once you attach the outer hoop, it will hide any peculiar knotting. You can also secure your warp threads by using tape on the side of your hoop - once you have woven, it will be secure enough to remove the tape.</div>

Finish what you start...9 years later. I handspun the green and pink and white yarn in 2004, and started this little sweater for a little girl who just started 6th grade this year. Ahem. I have made <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-surprise-jacket">Elizabeth Zimmerman's Baby Surprise Jacket</a> many times in the past, but in this one I lost track of where I was and it sat in a box for a very long time. Lately I have been super busy with the daily tasks of life and not able to do anything in the studio at all, save for pick up on projects that I can work on where I could figure out where I left off and work on around my daughter. With a little improvising I finished this sweater which is more like a short sleeved vest now for my daughter (yes, the intended recipient is in 6th grade!) but I feel really good about at least getting this project off the needles. Finish what you start. To celebrate I started a few little felt strawberries that M is going to help with "do the stuffin's" and little leaves on top. <br />

I spent a whole week last month at the Haliburton School of the Arts. This year was all about spinning silk, exotics (camelids, pet, bunny, etc.) AND dyeing with indigo. Learning about indigo blew my mind! It is the dye that has THE most superstitions, secrets, mystery and value (historically) in all the world in all time. I guess I'm including woad in this factoid too… So, my class cooked up 7 different indigo vats. My partner and I had some trouble with our vat at the outset - it wasn't blooming and the PH was really off. We decided to try it anyhow and it worked so well. I've worked with indigo before minimally, but after this class I can totally appreciate the magic and mystery surrounding indigo dyeing because it IS magic! In Japanese culture, a kimono is often dipped first as a symbol of good luck. So, I dipped a paper kimono in my vat - perhaps that's why it worked???</div>

The sashiko stitching continues. I keep most all scraps from other sewing projects and last week went through them and cut many into the same size to do some stitching experiments with. I am really interested in playing with the colors of the threads vs the stitching and the combinations and possibly layers that will come. This is another big experiment with a vague idea of what I am aiming for but letting the material dictate what will be done with it. Yesterday Alisa sent me a picture of a poster on the wall at her school that says "Detach from outcome, commit to process." I am really feeling that right now, freely experimenting with the materials I have and letting the process dictate where I go with it and what to try next. </div>

This is what my puppet looks like assembled. All the pieces that were in the last <a href="http://craftophilia.blogspot.ca/2014/08/progress-report-17.html">Progress Report</a> all went into making Rocky the Goat Puppet. This is a final project for year three of my formal spinning education. I really loved how it turned out and loved the process of making it. The story of Rocky goes like this… When I moved back to Canada from the USA about 6 years ago, I was working at a yarn mill and totally getting into spinning and knowing how the textile and fibre arts work from the basics up. The mill was on a working farm that raised Angora goats for Mohair. Rocky was the first animal I ever saw being born and I really took a shine to him. I spent a lot of time with him over the next few years and the owners of the mill/farm gifted me all his fleeces. I have wanted to make this totem since then. The puppet is made out of his fleece that I was present for the shearing of and processed myself. Rocky started this amazing change in me to stay curious about materials and where things come from and to know about fibre animals and what goes into making yarn. </div>

Still working on this one. Wrapping warp as groups is working really well towards the center of the circle. I used embroidery thread for some of the weft and it so shiny compared to the wool - a nice contrast I want to play with more, maybe more in a monochromatic approach with the same color with a texture from using different fibers.</div>

I haven't had much time to work on this piece, as I've been getting ready for <a href="http://craftophilia.blogspot.ca/2014/08/progress-report-17.html">school</a>. I am excited to get back to it though. I'm really enjoying playing with adding warp as I go. I'm contemplating what to do around the edge of the hoop. I've noticed that I've warped in two different ways, one is quite visible and the other isn't. I'm ok with it, but wish I had of been consistent. This just means that I may have to add something around the edges, perhaps wrapping hand-spun to cover the inner wooden hoop, then framing it with the outer hoop. We shall see...</div>

Sashiko has become the work of the summer. <a href="http://lixolux.blogspot.com/2014/08/kids-clothes-week-wrap-up.html">I spent a week working on clothing for my daughter</a> and I decided to make a dress with sashiko stitching on the bodice. With sewing you have transformative powers in your hands, in your needle and thread. You don't have to follow a pattern to the letter or use the fabric as is. I have been trying to use up everything in my fabric stash and in this case made a new fabric out of a cut of denim that honestly doesn't match the rest of the pieces of the dress. (Look carefully at the skirt fabric, its more teal and the back has darker pieces. Maybe only I can see it, I spent years scrutinizing shades of color in my last job and years of printing color in the darkroom) Add handstitching, or block printing, or any sort of surface design is a way to make something imperfect more imperfectly perfect - a sort of wabi sabi magic that I am completely embracing right now.</div>

I've been taking this six year long course through the <a href="http://www.ohs.on.ca/education/spinning-education/">Ontario Handweavers and Spinners Guild</a> in hand-spinning. It runs for 10 days a year in a beautiful place called <a href="http://www.haliburton-tourism.com/">Haliburton</a> at a beautiful <a href="http://flemingcollege.ca/school/haliburton-school-of-the-arts">school</a> up there. It is much more than hand-spinning though. I've been learning all about the properties of fibre, both natural and synthetic dyeing techniques, construction techniques and, of course, all aspects of spinning on a wheel. I'm going into my fourth year this year and I'm finishing up some homework. Homework for this course is pretty intense and very specific. The planning portion for each project is much more in-depth than anything I would do for work outside of school. This picture represents a fair amount of hours of work in fleece selection, spinning, weaving and crochet. It's going to be an angora goat puppet! I will post more pictures here as I progress….</div>

I'm really loving working on this piece. I've been adding warp in different directions as I go. I am trying to now weave under and over some of the finished areas. I've found that the warp threads tend to slip as I'm weaving (since it's in a round hoop), so, I've used masking tape to start to hold the more awkward threads in place while I weave. It seems to be working quite nicely...</div>

This little morsel is an experiment in weaving with art yarn. I have many many skeins of art yarn that I spun over the years, never really intending to use it for a specific project, spinning sequins, feathers, big clomps of wool, thread, fabric, lace all together in more of a process meditative way, having fun with the materials as a counterpoint to the fine worsted spinning I tend to like to do. (Fine worsted spinning is making very controlled fine yarn with high twist that takes a lot of focus!) This yarn is from a class I took with <a href="http://www.pluckyfluff.com/">Lexi Boeger</a>, years and years ago at <a href="http://urbanfaunastudio.com/">Urban Fauna in SF</a>. (2005?) Long ago enough that one person in the class recognized me from my serial<a href="http://www.diynetwork.com/videos/hanging-basket-liner/7948.html"> knitsterism on Knitty Gritty </a>(I am knitting on the couch 4 seconds before the end, Alisa is knitting behind Erika's Head) (Random the things you remember) We made crazy batts in Lexi's class and spun them, crazy batts with every sort of thing in them. I very much like how the art yarn looks woven, but I think it needs a larger space to breathe and really show all the weird shit that is in it. Also I sort of want to cut apart the yarns to make some color sense out of them. A good experiment in my book is when you do something that may not be completely successful but you find at least one new path to try out. I now have quite a few to try.</div>

I AM CRAZY FOR SASHIKO! After making the pillow, I wanted to experiment with drawing the patterns to be able to change the scale and also to experiment with different fabrics. The polka dot seemed like a natural pattern already to play with some freehand stitches. I found a book at the library in japanese that has pictures of how to draw out on a grid any traditional pattern at any scale and have been practicing on paper. The denim piece is a sampler for two garments I am making - testing out the scale and the thread. I am working on a dress for M to try out sashiko and garment construction, and hopefully it will work well so I can also do stitching on a larger scale.</div>

I've started a new circular weaving… well, it's in a circle. I've created a base that I'll add on to with additional warp and be able to weave into. I'm experimenting with layering warp with this piece. So far, it's a lot of fun and I really like it. I'm using all hand-spun and I'm also mixing yarns to create gradients. </div>

Weaving in a circular frame means you can branch out and add a warp here, wrap a weft there, till you are suddenly weaving in all directions at once. Working on this at the beach today, I was thinking about how serendipitous and wild this little piece is becoming - I had a plan and now its telling me to do something completely different. Experiment with filling the space. I am not sure how much more I am going to work on this one (mainly because my tapestry needle is not fitting in the spaces of the hoop anymore - there is not a lot of room to work in a hoop this size that I've been just winding the yarn with my fingers in some parts) but I do know its come along a lot crazier than I thought it would be, and all the better. </div>

I've decided to use up all my stash before I purchase anything new. I also have a (newish) rule to only purchase enough stuff to make a whole project because, when I first started spinning, I would buy a bit here and a bit there… so, I have all these bits laying around and decided to put them together to make enough yarn for a sweater. I have four different colourways of some nice merino and I'm spinning them to create a yarn with very long colour repeats. I have two brights with neutrals between. I'm ready to ply up a skein to see how it looks - I'm sure it will be fine because I like things a little kooky anyways!</div>

Trying out new stitches and techniques is fun, but what to do with the samplers when done? Make pillows of course! On the left is a sashiko embroidered pattern (a preprinted pattern from Olympus.) I loved making this piece - it was a sort of a test for sashiko that I want to incorporate into other sewing projects. Its different from the embroidery that I did for the <a href="http://craftophilia.blogspot.com/2014/04/progress-report-5.html">Alabama Chanin inspired dress</a> - though the running stitch is the same in sashiko its approached as an allover pattern vs. embroidering motifs into a pattern as you go. The right is the completed <a href="http://craftophilia.blogspot.com/2014/06/progress-report-13.html">Nigerian reverse applique piece</a> which has such a rad 3D quality to it. Quilted stained glass. I am having a lot of fun learning these techniques - and have figured out a way to possibly a very exciting project combining them. </div>
